Following a dental extraction

 
Bleeding
  • Bite on gauze or a tea bag and change them every 30 minutes.
  • Put a towel on your pillow to avoid blood stains if bleeding persists overnight.
  • On the first day, avoid intense exercise or activity.
Avoid
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol during the first 2 days following the extraction.
  • Do not use mouthwash containing alcohol for 2 weeks.
  • Do not rinse, spit or drink with a straw the first day because this may dislodge the blood clot.
Nutrition
  • Do not eat hot or spicy food the first day (including coffee).
  • Avoid small seeds and broccoli that could remain trapped in the socket.
  • Eating food rich in protein and vitamin C is recommended.
  • Eat soft food the first days if necessary.
Hygiene
  • Brush and floss your teeth.
  • 48 hours after the extraction, you can rinse with salt and water (not before). It will accelerate the healing and dislodge food that could get trapped in the socket.
Medication
  • Take the antibiotics (penicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin…) as prescribed for 7 to 10 days.
  • Do not stop the antibiotics unless an allergy occurs (rash, etc.)
  • If needed you may take the anti-inflammatory or painkillers (ibuprofen, Advil, Tylenol)
  • If this does not relieve the pain, you may take painkillers that contain codeine such as:
  • Percocet, Empracet, Percodan.
  • Do not drive or use machinery because these medications can cause drowsiness.
  • If your dentist has prescribed Dexamethasone, do not forget to reduce the dosage as  instructed.  A swelling can still happen despite taking this medication.
  • Call your dentist if your stomach cannot tolerate this medication.
  • Do not take Aspirin because it will increase the bleeding, unless prescribed by your doctor.
Swelling
  • Apply an ice pack on your cheek for 20 minutes every hour during this first two days of surgery as recommended.
  • On the days following the surgery you can apply warm towels to relax your muscles.
Sutures
  • Two weeks after surgery, the sutures will dissolve.
  • If the sutures come undone, you may remove them.
Dry Socket
  • If intense pain is felt 24 to 48 hours after surgery contact your dentist immediately.
  • Smokers are more prone to getting a dry socket.

Following dental implants placement

 
Rest
  • Relax for the rest of the day.
  • Avoid any exercise during the first 48 hours.
  • Do not drive if you take pain killers containing codeine.
 
Swelling
  • A slight swelling or bruising (blue) of your face may occur.
  • Apply an ice pack on the side of your face for 15 minutes every half hour only if there is swelling.
 
Pain
  • For mild to moderate pain, take the anti-inflammatories precribed (Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc.).
  • For severe pain, take the prescribed painkillers with codeine (Percocet, Oxycodone, Tylenol with Codeine, etc.).
 
Antibiotics
  • Take antibiotics as precribed. Always finish them all unless you develop an allergy.
  • If you take contraceptive pills, take other means of contraception since its effect will be altered by antibiotics up to two days after after you finish taking your antibiotics.
 
Bleeding
  • Often, the bleeding is very light. Bite on a gauze for 20 minutes if necessary.
 
Diet
  • Day 1: Avoid any hot, spicy or acidic food. Instead, eat ice cream, jello, pudding, yogurt, milk shakes, cottage cheese, Ensure, Boost.
  • Week 1 and 2: Have a soft diet (rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, soup, lentils, fish, ground meat, cooked vegetables, yogurt, eggs, jello, bananas, etc.).
  • Most importantly, do not eat on the surgery side for 2 weeks.
 
Rinse
  • Avoid vigourous rinsing, spitting, drinking with a straw or mouthwash containing alcohol for the first 24 hours as it may prematurely dissolve the blood clot.
 
Brushing
  • Day 1: Do not brush your teeth and do not floss.
  • Week 2 and 2 : brush your teeth except those near the implants site. Do the same with flossing.
 
Sutures
  • We will remove your sutures after two weeks.
 
Precautions
  • Do not smoke nor drink alcohol for 96 hours.
  • Do not look at the treated area as you may undo the stitches and prevent the gum from closing properly.
